”I wanna take you higher”: The stylistic development and cultural dissemination of post-psychedelic funk music. $49.99 A traditional history of rock music divides up the genre into chronologically discrete eras, the fifties, the sixties and the seventies. Due to its convoluted influence streams, black popular music, especially funk must be looked at differently. Following on from the narrowly defined funk of James Brown, the second-wave of funk groups such as Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic allied themselves to the late-sixties psychedelic rock movement. Essentially funk was black music and rock was white, and the pivotal figure that connected these two movements was Jimi Hendrix.;Contemporaneous soul albums were referencing jazz, which had by the early seventies, become wholly appropriated by white musicians. Funk became a tool for the re-appropriation of African and African American musical idioms. In doing so it set itself up as a parallel and an alternative to mainstream rock, a sort of black rock analogous to punk rock music’s relationship to mainstream rock a generation later. Indeed the parallels between funk and punk run deep. Funkadelic, during their brief spell in Detroit were part of the same underground scene as some of the founding figures of punk namely, Iggy Pop and the MC5. Funk gave voice to the expression of urban alienation felt by many African-Americans in the seventies, but it also, at first through the use of funk in blaxploitation films, became a symbol of vice, funk being the soundtrack to both seventies cop-dramas and seventies pornography.;Ultimately, funk was subsumed by the disco movement, a genre that it had helped create. Yet funk was to reappear again in the eighties as the instrumental basis for hip-hop. The cross-section of this time period most closely addressed in this dissertation is the early seventies, and in particular 1971, looking at two seminal funk albums from this year, There’s a Riot Goin’ On by Sly and the Family Stone and Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. ”I’m learning as I go, and I don’t like that”: Urban community college students’ college literacy. $49.99 This study explored the perceptions of students at an urban community college as they prepared for transfer to university. I interviewed four students, Latinas enrolled in teacher education programs, three times each for approximately one hour each. The first interviews were conducted while students were enrolled at Jane Addams College, a pseudonym for an ethnically diverse community college in a large Midwestern city. Follow-up interviews were conducted with the students over the course of one year, in 2006 and 2007. Interviews were conducted in two cases following the students from the community college through transfer to universities, in one case following the student as she continued to study at the community college, and in one case following the student through a period in which she had stopped out of college.;The title of this dissertation is a paraphrase of something a participant said: “There’s a lot that I need to learn…. I interviewed four students, Latinas enrolled in teacher education programs, three times each for approximately one hour each. The first interviews were conducted while students were enrolled at Jane Addams College, a pseudonym for an ethnically diverse community college in a large Midwestern city. Follow-up interviews were conducted with the students over the course of one year, in 2006 and 2007. ”Racism is a misunderstanding”: Rhetorically listening to white students’ performances of race. $49.99 This study describes white student talk about race in terms of performance. I show what white talk regarding race looked like in my study, thus inviting the reader to reflect on her own experiences in terms of performativity and common sense. Recognizing student talk as a complex performance enables us to introduce the practice of rhetorical listening into the classroom in order to encourage students with differing common senses to work toward mutual understanding.;The dissertation is based on an empirical multivocal study in which white first year writing students and teachers were asked to comment on a racial text, reflect on their commentary, and then discuss a video of a racial conversation among first year writing students. I argue that individuals draw on discourses when performing in order to demonstrate common sense while maintaining social relationships. White students’ common sense is underwritten by epistemological ignorance of structural white privilege. The inability to recognize and validate assertions of white privilege is a result of this ignorance. I suggest the intent/effect heuristic as a functional practice of rhetorical listening. This practice can disrupt the weight of authority of common sense in order to reveal racial assumptions and privilege. I also reflect on this dissertation as my own performance of whiteness. |

The second best decision was to marry Lois Tyson, whom I met at Bob Jones University in 1951.I spent my boyhood days, first on a farm and then in a small town during the years of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Then came World War 2, when I was in high school. It was a long war; 1941-45.As soon as I graduated I went into the U.S. Navy and served as a seaman aboard the U.S.S. Pocono, the Flagship of the Atlantic Fleet.After leaving the Navy in 1946, I attended the University of Pittsburgh by virtue of the G.I. Bill, which paid college tuition and books for World War 2 servicemen. I graduated in June 1950, with a major in Business Administration and a minor in History.During my senior year at Pitt, I was under deep conviction of my need of complete surrender to the Lord. I had been raised in a Christian home and we went to a fundamental church, but I had too many distractions (the war years and getting a college education) to get serious about spiritual things. However, the “Hound of Heaven” tracked me down and in December of 1950, I made that greatest decision of all, to completely surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. I said, “Lord Jesus, I am yours and You are mine.” I never looked back.Thus began a great journey of faith and service. Within the pages of “…but to minister,” I tell this wondrous story. …And Don’t the Kids Just Love It $16.98 The first full album by Television Personalities, recorded after a four-year series of often brilliant D.I.Y. singles recorded under a variety of names, including the O-Level and the Teenage Filmstars, is probably the purest expression of Daniel Treacy’s sweet-and-sour worldview. The songs, performed by Treacy, Ed Ball, and Mark Sheppard, predict both the C-86 aesthetic of simple songs played with a minimum of elaboration but a maximum of enthusiasm and earnestness and the later lo-fi aesthetic. The echoey, hissy production makes the songs sound as if the band were playing at the bottom of an empty swimming pool, recorded by a single microphone located two houses away, yet somehow that adds to the homemade charm of the record. Treacy’s vocals are tremulous and shy, and his lyrics run from the playful “Jackanory Stories” to several rather dark songs that foreshadow the depressive cast of many of his later albums. “Diary of a Young Man,” which consists of several spoken diary entries over a haunting, moody twang-guitar melody, is downright scary in its aura of helplessness and inertia. The mood is lightened a bit by some of the peppier songs, like the smashing “World of Pauline Lewis” and the “David Watts” rewrite “Geoffrey Ingram,” and the re-recorded version of the earlier single “I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives,” complete with deliberately intrusive prerecorded bird sounds, is one of the most charming things Television Personalities ever did. This album must have sounded hopelessly amateurish and cheaply ramshackle at the time of its 1981 release, but in retrospect, it’s clearly a remarkably influential album that holds up extremely well. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

…Coals to Newcastle $69.98 When the Scottish pop band Orange Juice split up in January of 1985, it didn? t seem too likely that they would become one of the more influential bands of the era. Yes, their early singles on the tiny Postcard label generated some excitement, and they had a bona fide chart hit with the 1983? s single “Rip It Up,” but their career had mostly come to a sputtering halt outside the lens of the public eye. One short year later, with the rise of C-86 and the early indie pop bands, the brightly scrappy attitude and scruffily melodic sound of early Orange Juice suddenly became popular again. Fast forward to the mid-’90s and Belle & Sebastian, then Franz Ferdinand and more, to see that the Orange Juice legacy lives on as strongly as ever. The songs of Edwyn Collins (and those of James Kirk) have been required listening for a large number of great pop bands. Thanks to the release of 2005? s The Glasgow School, which made all the band? s early recordings widely available for the first time, even more bands were able to draw inspiration from the band and their sound. In 2010, all the band? s recorded output was finally made easily accessible.Put together in part by Edwyn Collins, the box set ? Coals to Newcastle is beautiful to look at, wonderful to listen to, and basically a dream come true for Orange Juice fans who weren? t able to get a hold of the original albums or the Japanese CD reissues. Even if you did own either of those, Coals is still worth seeking out for all the extras. The six-CD/one-DVD set contains all of the band? s recorded output: the early singles, the three studio albums, the Texas Fever EP, a full complement of B-sides, a handful of demos and different mixes, a disc of BBC sessions, two videos, live footage from the Old Grey Whistle Test, and a very ’80s concert video (Dada with the Juice) that the final incarnation of the band made.
